Let’s Put Well-Being at the Heart of Diabetes Care
November 14 marks World Diabetes Day, a global opportunity for people living with diabetes, healthcare professionals, advocates, and the public to raise awareness and take action on diabetes. This year’s theme, “Diabetes and Well-Being”, emphasizes how living with or caring for someone with diabetes can impact both physical and mental well-being.
Diabetes in Canada
In Canada, a person is diagnosed with diabetes every three minutes. By the end of 2024, 4 million Canadians will have been diagnosed with diabetes - that’s 10% of the population! An additional 6 million Canadians are at a high risk for developing the condition.
A recent study by Diabetes Canada found that 90% of those living with Type 1 Diabetes and 70% of those living with Type 2 Diabetes experience feelings of shame and blame related to their diabetes. Moreover, 31% of people living with Type 2 Diabetes report distress related to concerns about their future and the potential for serious complications.
