Comforting Hot Chocolate Mix

Join Calgary Meals on Wheels for its annual YYC Hot Chocolate Fest! This month-long event brings our community together to support local businesses and help us raise funds to support our mission in feeding Calgarians in need.

Every February, participating cafe’s, restaurants, and chocolatiers compete for awards in several categories based on votes from Calgarians! $1 to $3 from every cup sold supports Calgary Meals on Wheels directly! See YYC Hot Chocolate Fest for more information.

For those of us that prefer to stay indoors in the cold, make this comforting hot chocolate mix for the cold weeks ahead!

Recipe adapted from Emily Richards, P.H. Ec. from Health Canada and the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Ingredients

· 250mL (1 cup) instant skim or soymilk powder

· 75 mL (1/3 cup) granulated sugar

· 125mL (1/2 cup) unsweetened cocoa powder

· 10mL (1 tsp) ground cinnamon (optional)

Directions:

· In a jar, mix together the milk powder, sugar, cocoa powder, and optional cinnamon. Mix can be stored at room temperature for up to 2 months!

When Ready to Drink:

· Bring 175 mL (3/4 cup) of skim milk or fortified soy beverage to a boil and whisk in 45mL (3 tbsp) of the hot chocolate mix until smooth and combined.

Too sweet? It’s easy to reduce the sweetness to suit your taste! Experiment with other spices such as nutmeg, cardamom, or even cayenne and chili powder for a Mexican-inspired hot chocolate! View the full original recipe here.
