Meet Irene

An active Calgary senior left in a difficult situation after a spinal injury threatened her independence. After fracturing two of her vertebrae, she was unable to provide herself the nutritious meals that she needed. As she lived alone, she was unsure where to turn for support. Not ready to leave her independence behind, Irene signed up for the Calgary Meals on Wheels daily delivery program: Our Chef’s Daily Special. Simply having nutritious meals delivered to her door has allowed her to continue to flourish on her own.

“If I didn’t have that, I wouldn’t know what to do. I find so much comfort in knowing that I will always have dinner waiting for me.”

Irene is also thankful for the daily interaction with the volunteers. Irene describes herself as very social – an active member of the church as well as a part of the Seniors Assistance Association in Bowness and Montgomery. Unfortunately, due to her declining health, she is no longer able to make it out as much as she would like.

“When I do go out, it’s just doctors’ visits and hospitals.”

She now looks forward to, not only the food, but the genuine interaction with the compassionate volunteers whom deliver it.

Like Irene, we all face challenging times, but together, we can make sure no one does it on an empty stomach.
