Volunteer Highlight: Hattie
As we celebrate our 50th Anniversary, so does volunteer Ms. Hattie Boothman.
Hattie has been volunteering with Calgary Meals on Wheels since 1965, and she is the only volunteer on our roster who has been involved with our organization for all 50 years of our history!
Our story began as a pilot project of the United Church Women, making meals for 8 clients from the basement of a YMCA. Hattie first got involved with us when a friend at church told her about this new initiative and asked if she could help deliver. Hattie thought to herself "I can do that," and as she says, "I didn't go out on the first day of deliveries...but a couple days later." Hattie delivered for us for 48 years until we moved to our new building. Now she helps us out with special events and media interviews, since she is such a great ambassador for our organization.
When we asked Hattie why volunteering with Calgary Meals on Wheels is important or what made her stay involved so long or what her favourite part of volunteering is, the answer is always the same...the clients. She enjoys meeting the clients, and they are always so appreciative of the meals and the visit.
To mark our 50th Anniversary, Hattie had the opportunity to deliver meals again and was out on route on today visiting clients and telling them about our anniversary.
