Volunteer Awards

We recently have had the pleasure of hosting an event for some of the most important members of the Calgary Meals on Wheels family, our Volunteers.

On April 12th we got together at the Shepard Community Hall to celebrate the dedication and commitment of our volunteers. We gratefully acknowledge that without their continued and peerless support we would not be able to provide our services to the Calgary Community and the people who need it most.

We invited our volunteers to a special luncheon where we honoured those special individuals who have helped us achieve so much. We recognized the great investment in time that these individuals have contributed to serving the Calgary community. Volunteers were awarded certificates commemorating the amount of time they have donated ranging from 300 hours up to 4200 hours of service.

We also took time to recognize the efforts of some volunteers that went above and beyond the call of duty with two distinct awards, the Patricia Bourne Award & the Bill Girling Heart Award.

Patricia Bourne Award

The late Patricia Bourne was President of Calgary Meals on Wheels from 1978 to 1981. In recognition of her volunteer commitment and in her memory, the family established a fund to enable the organization to hold our Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon to honour our volunteers. The Patricia Bourne Memorial Award is given to an individual who is nominated by fellow volunteers for their exemplary contribution to Calgary Meals on Wheels. This year’s recipient is Nona Flemming

Bill Girling Heart Award

In memory of Bill Girling and to honour his commitment in volunteering with Calgary Meals on Wheels for 25 years and contributing 5500 hours of service, this award was established to recognize volunteers who exemplify his heartfelt and lifelong dedication to volunteering. This year’s recipient is Gisela Durlacher.

A big thank-you to all that help make the luncheon happen especially our amazing volunteer committee. We couldn't pull it off without you. Special thanks to the Cooperators for lending us volunteers to help make the centerpieces.

So today and always, we want thank our volunteers for all that they do and for continuously being the roots of Calgary Meals on Wheels
