World Health Day 2025: A Call for Better Maternal and Newborn Health

Every year, World Health Day is celebrated on April 7th and kicks off a year-long campaign for a critical global health issue. This year’s theme, “Healthy beginnings, hopeful futures,” emphasizes the importance of ensuring every woman has access to safe, compassionate healthcare that protects her health and the well-being of her child.

The Importance of Nutrition for Moms and Kids

A key aspect of maternal and newborn health is the nutrition that mothers receive before, during, and after pregnancy. Access to healthful food plays a crucial role in supporting the health of both moms and their children.

· Before Pregnancy: Nutrient-rich foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and protein can help ensure a mother’s body can properly support the growth and development of her baby.

· During Pregnancy: Adequate nutrition can prevent pregnancy complications for mothers such as gestational diabetes and high blood pressure. Risk for low birth weight, preterm birth, and developmental delays are also reduced with a nutrient-rich diet.

· After Pregnancy: Healthy nutrition is just as important after pregnancy as it is before and during. Proper nutrition helps mothers recover physically and mentally, enabling them to regain energy, restore hormonal balance, and reduce the risk of postpartum complications like anemia and depression.

How You Can Help

You can get involved in the campaign by sharing information, participating in one of the many global events, donating to the WHO Foundation which supports efforts to protect mothers and babies around the world, and most importantly you can share your own personal experiences with pregnancy and birth to raise awareness.
